Secure modules accelerate IoT development

Samsung believes it can accelerate the next-generation of Internet of Things (IoT) products with the Samsung Artik 053 modules, a QuickStart program and platform enhancements for interoperability, enhanced security, and connected services

Designed to help customers get to market faster with more secure offerings and services, the Samsung Artkik Smart IoT platform products also improve return on investment, says the company.

The Samsung Artik platform includes new end-to-end enterprise-grade security enhancements. It also now enables easy-to-use, secure services for device onboarding, device and user management, edge node management, and secure over the air (OTA) updates.

Samsung introduced the Artik 053 module at The Internet of Things World 2017, Santa Clara, Califonia, USA, this week. The production-ready Samsung Artik 053 module is an affordable IoT solution with high-performance and hardened security for next-generation edge products like connected home appliances, building products, health care devices, and industrial automation. It can dramatically reduce development time, says Samsung, with integrated real-time processing via a 320MHz ARM Cortex R4 core, 1.4Mbyte random access memory (RAM) and 8Mbyte flash, software and a pre-certified Wi-Fi radio. The currently available Artik family of IoT modules include pre-loaded access to the Samsung Artik Cloud platform secure services, and includes software for faster and simpler development of new connected enterprise, industrial and consumer applications.

There are new, integrated end-to-end security enhancements across hardware, software and communications. In the Artik Cloud platform, these include fast device onboarding, edge node management, secure OTA updates, integration with Amazon AWS Kinesis Stream, new cloud connectors including Google Assistant on Google Home and Amazon Alexa Smart Home Skill.

The new Samsun Artik QuickStart program offers a range of services that covers product design and development, including UX, UI, software, firmware, cloud, mobile app, end-to-end integration, and development. Samsung also offers custom integration and on-site workshops and training.

Samsung also announced that VMware has joined the Samsung Artik Partner Program. The companies will work together to accelerate the development, deployment, and management of IoT solutions for enterprises.

To reach a wider audience and help speed up IoT development and time to market, Samsung reached a global distribution agreement with Mouser Electronics to distribute the Samsung Artik family of modules, development kits and accessories. Other worldwide distribution partners include Arrow Electronics, EBV Elektronik, Digi-Key, Data JCE and Mujin.
