AC/DC power supplies are designed for long-life LED signage

Convection and conduction cooled power supplies from TDK Lambda include 3.3, 4.2 and 28V models. The CUS200LD series of AC/DC power supplies are rated from 79 to 120W with convection cooling and 99 to 151W when mounted on an aluminium plate for conduction cooling. The series can deliver up to 206W for 10 seconds, says TDK. The CUS200LD series conservative capacitor ratings are designed for long field life in LED signage applications, as well as industrial, broadcast, test, measurement and communication equipment.

The supplies accept a wide range 85 to 265V AC input, and is now available with 3.3, 4.2, 5.0, 7.5, 12, 15, 24, 28 and 48V outputs. All models are adjustable over a ±10 per cent range to accommodate non-standard voltage requirements.

The CUS200LD is packaged in a compact low profile enclosure, measuring 160 x 60 x 31mm. All models will start up at -40 degrees C and can operate in ambient temperatures from -20 to +70 degrees C, derating from +45 degrees C (conduction cooling) to 40 per cent load at 70 degrees C.

Safety certification is to the IEC/EN/UL 60950-1 standards with CE marking for the Low Voltage, EMC and RoHS2 Directives. The units also comply with EN 55011-B and EN 55032-B conducted and radiated emissions, and meet the EN 61000-3-2 harmonics and IEC 61000-4 immunity standards.

Bi-directional synchronous buck-boost controllers smooth path for industrial power

Two bi-directional four-switch synchronous buck-boost controllers from Renesas are believed to be the industry’s only true bi-directional controllers that sense peak current at both ends and provide cycle-by-cycle current limit in both directions while in buck or boost mode.

The ISL81601 and ISL81401 controllers generate point-of-load (PoL) and voltage rail conversions with peak efficiency up to 99 per cent. The ISL81601 has an input range of 4.5 to 60V and produces a 0.8 to 60V output to support most industrial batteries, namely 12, 24, 36 and 48V.

The ISL81401 is a 4.5 to 40V input and 0.8 to 40V output version, and its unidirectional counterpart is the ISL81401A. The controllers are suitable for DC power back-up and battery-powered medical, industrial and telecommunications systems.

According to Renesas, the ISL81601 and ISL81401’s bidirectional peak current sensing capability eliminates complex external circuitry required for charging and discharging a battery to supply power to the loads. A proprietary algorithm provides smooth mode transitions between buck, boost and buck-boost, while reducing low frequency ripple at Vout, ensuring minimal disturbances during line or load transients. The algorithm also ensures predictable ripple voltage under all conditions. Multi-layer overcurrent protection and a precision control algorithm deliver constant current down to 0.1V at Vout for reliable operation. Designers can expand system power by paralleling an unlimited number of controllers, says Renesas. The ISL81601 and ISL81401 operate two switches at a time to minimise power loss and achieve higher efficiency.

“Our new bidirectional buck-boost controllers eliminate extra sensing circuitry and offer customers a robust feature-set that maintains battery health and superior power utilization,” said Philip Chesley, Vice President of Industrial Analog and Power Business Division, Renesas Electronics Corporation. “Leveraging Renesas’ proprietary modulation scheme and algorithms allows the highly integrated ISL81601, ISL81401 and ISL81401A to achieve the high reliability performance required for battery-powered equipment.”

The ISL81601 and ISL81401/A can be combined with a Renesas RL78 microcontroller (MCU), or other MCUs, to program the voltages, battery charge/discharge function, and on-the-fly bidirectional power flow. Designers can also use the PowerCompass tool to help them quickly identify other power supply parts that match their specific system requirements. Multiple power rails can be set up and designers can perform high-level system analysis and generate custom reference design files in minutes.

All three controllers and evaluation boards are available now. The ISL81601 bidirectional 60V synchronous buck-boost controller is available in a 38-lead HTSSOP package and a 32-lead QFN package. The ISL81401 bi-directional and ISL81401A uni-directional synchronous 40V buck-boost controllers are available in 32-lead QFN packages.

15W and 20W AC/DC converters target IoT and smart homes

Based on the footprint of the compact RAC10-K modules, these new modules feature high-efficiency over a wide load range and minimal standby power consumption.

Both the RAC15-K and RAC20-K operate within a temperature range of -40 degrees C to +80 degrees C and offer fully protected 5VDC single outputs.

The complete range of single output (5 to 48VDC), dual output options (12 and 15VDC) and wired versions will be available in autumn 2018.

Mouser adds Semtech’s LoRa transceivers for LPWAN and IoT applications

Continuing its new product introduction (NPI) mission, Mouser Electronics has added the SX1261 and SX1262 LoRa transceivers from Semtech.

Designed for extended battery life, the SX126x transceivers have just 4.2mA of active receive current consumption. The sub-GHz radio transceivers are suitable for long-range RF wireless applications and are fully compliant with the physical layer requirements of the LoRaWAN specification released by the LoRa Alliance.

The Semtech SX1261x transceivers support LoRa modulation for low power wide-area network (LPWAN) applications, as well as (G)FSK/MSK modulation for legacy applications. They include a new spreading factor of SF5 for dense networks, adds Mouser. The SX1261 can transmit up to +15dBm, and the SX1262 can transmit up to +22dBm with efficient, integrated power amplifiers.

The SX126x devices expand network coverage while reducing the receive-mode power consumption to just 4.5mA, this is 50 per cent less than the previous generation, notes Mouser. This extends the battery life of the LoRa-based sensors by up to 30 per cent. It also opens up many new uses for improved connectivity with IoT sensor applications.

The SX126x offer global continuous frequency coverage from 150 to 960MHz, covering all major sub-GHz ISM bands. Both radio devices are suitable for systems targeting compliance with radio regulations including, but not limited to, ETSI EN 300 220, FCC CFR 47 Part 15, China regulatory requirements, and the Japanese ARIB T-108. The SX1262 transceiver is supported by the SX1262DVK1CAS Development Kit, also available from Mouser.

Semtech’s SX1261 and SX1262 LoRa transceivers are now available in a compact 4.0 x 4.0mm package that is 45 per cent smaller than the current generation. Target applications are IoT and wireless projects, including smart meters, agricultural sensors, asset tracking, building automation, streetlights, safety and security sensors, healthcare, and robotics.
