Microchip unveils the SAM R30 SiP for wireless connectivity

Microchip has combined a low power microcontroller (MCU) with an 802.15.4 sub-GHz radio in the SAM R30 system in package (SiP). The single chip RF MCU enables long lasting battery life in connected devices, says the company.

The SAM R30 SiP is suitable for use in connected home, smart city and industrial applications.

As the demand for battery-powered wirelessly connected systems continues to rise, the low-power SAM R30 meets the market’s power-conscious needs with features that extend battery life for multiple years, says Microchip. The SiP is built using the SAM L21 MCU which leverages the ARM Cortex M0+ architecture, the most energy efficient ARM-based architecture available. The SAM R30 has low power sleep modes, with wake from serial communication or general-purpose input/output (GPIO), while consuming just 500nA.

The SAM R30 SiP operates within the 769 to 935MHz range. Developers can implement a point-to-point, star or mesh network. Microchip helps developers begin work immediately with the free MiWi point-to-point/star network protocol stack. Mesh networking capabilities will be available later this year. Nodes outfitted with the SiP can be positioned as far as 1km apart, with the ability to double the range in a star topology. When used in a mesh network, the SAM R30 delivers reliable wide-area coverage for applications such as street lighting or wind and solar farms.

Microchip is also enabling developers to begin prototyping immediately with the ATSAMR30-XPRO development board, This USB-interfaced development board is supported by the Atmel Studio 7 software development kit (SDK).

The SAM R30 SiP is available in two QFN packages the ATSAMR30E18 in a 32QFN package and the ATSAMR30G18 in a 48QFN package. Both are available to be sampled or purchased in volume production quantities.
