Evaluation kit supports energy harvesting embedded controller

For the development of battery maintenance-free IoT equipment, Renesas Electronics has introduced the RE family, which encompasses the company’s current and future line-up of energy harvesting embedded controllers. The RE Family is based on Renesas’ proprietary Silicon on Thin Buried Oxide (SOTB) process technology. SOTB is claimed to dramatically reduce power consumption in both active and standby states, eliminating the need for battery replacement or recharging.

Following the introduction of the RE01 microcontrollers, the first of the RE family, the RE01 Group evaluation kit is now available to allow users working with the RE01

Hiroto Nitta, senior vice president, Head of SoC Business, IoT and Infrastructure Business Unit at Renesas, said: “We hope this will accelerate the spread of IoT equipment powered by energy harvesting.”

The RE01 evaluation kit includes an evaluation board with an RE01 embedded controller, an interface for the energy harvesting device and a rechargeable battery interface. There is also an Arduino-compatible interface for easy expansion and evaluation of sensor boards and a Pmod connector to expand and evaluate wireless functionality. There is also a low power memory in pixel (MIP) LCD expansion board so that users can evaluate display functions faster. The kit also contains sample code and application notes that  serve as references for power management design that eliminates the need for battery maintenance, and driver software that supports CMSIS, Arm’s Cortex Microcontroller Software Interface Standard. Sample code for low power ADCs, digital filter and fast Fourier transform (FFT) routines, 2D graphics MIP LCD displays, and secure boot and secure firmware update functions for improved security are available.

The kit can be used to adopt energy harvesting based on RE01 Group devices at the system level and will accelerate the development of equipment that does not require battery maintenance.

IAR Embedded Workbench for Arm which can use the high efficiency IAR C/C++ compiler, and e2 studio (note 2) which can use the free GNU compiler are available as the developmental environment.

Green tags encourage green RFID products

Smartrac Technology Group introduces the Eagle Green tags, the latest in the company’s green tag program. The compact inlays and tags are targeted at retail-optimised applications.

Eagle Green uses plastic-free, fully recyclable paper as the substrate, foregoes adhesives as much as possible, and comes with a laser-cut aluminium antenna that allows the complete recycling of aluminium residues, resulting in a significant carbon footprint reduction. All products within the green tag programme aim to address businesses that recognise the importance of a greatly reduce environmental impact across all applications and markets.

The tags are among the smallest retail-orientated inlays with global performance available on the market. Both have passed Auburn University’s ARC categories A, B, C, D, F, G, I, K, M, Q, W2 and W5, and are available in dry and paper-tag delivery formats with a compact size of 44 x 28 mm / 1.7 x 1.1 in, which helps in the conversion for end-application usage.

Equipped with an NXP UCODE 8 IC, which shares memory size and typical IC features with NXP’s UCODE 7 IC, a self-adjust feature helps maximises product performance in challenging environments, offers improved read and write sensitivity and a fast encoding speed.

The chip has an integrated brand identifier function to prove product authenticity and a memory safeguard system to protect business data.

These tags benefit from Smartrac’s platform and data management capabilities to record and manage a complete set of unique transponder data, for example UID no, order no, batch no, or yield, at production level in a controlled and secure way. The company’s product digitisation solutions enable full traceability of delivered RFID products.

QuickLogic partners with Nuance Communications for voice recognition

Multi-core, voice-enabled SoCs, embedded FPGA IP, and endpoint AI provider, QuickLogic is partnering with conversational AI and ambient intelligence specialist, Nuance Communications, to deliver low power, wake word and voice command technology for power-sensitive applications, such as hearable and wearable devices.

Nuance’s voice recognition technology and QuickLogic’sEOS S3 voice and sensor processing platform will provide customers an end-to-end, reliable hardware and software voice recognition solution, says QuickLogic.

The low power Nuance voice recognition technology has been integrated with QuickLogic’s advanced EOS Voice and Sensor Processing SoC. The SoC’s architecture is claimed to enable the industry’s most advanced and compute intensive sensor processing capability at a fraction of the power consumption of competing technologies.

The Nuance technology provides the performance and low power consumption required for always-on wake word detection, and specifically supports the Alexa wake-word protocol. Technical enhancements enable it to improve voice recognition accuracy in difficult or noisy environments.

The integrated system supports always-on, always-listening fixed triggers, user defined triggers and phrases, and commands that can be accurately detected in silent to extremely noisy environments.

Scott Haylock, director of product marketing at QuickLogic, explains:”In response to customer demand, and the growing hearables market, we’ve augmented the EOS S3 OPEN Software Platform to include Nuance’s technology. This addition helps QuickLogic address the largest possible product mix of new and existing voice-controlled end-products.”

Skyline RFID inlays and tags can be used on metal

Rain radio frequency identification (RFID) inlays can be used on metal surfaces for and have a reading range of 6m.

The Skyline Rain RFID inlays and tags have an optimised antenna and spacer-based design. A customised ultra high frequency (UHF) inlay is based on NXP’s UCODE 7xm IC with 448-bit EPC memory and extended user memory of 2kbits. The resulting transponder is then folded and applied around a synthetic spacer developed and provided by identytag of Bad Berleburg, Germany.

The advanced antenna design, the IC’s long read range and reliable operation in dense reader and noisy environments through high interference rejection, as well as  optimised spacer material result in an on-metal read range in a compact tag, with a die-cut size of 54 x 25 x 1.8mm.

The inlay is permanently attached to the spacer and a layer of strong and resilient RA-33 adhesive is applied. According to Smartrac, this provides “excellent adhesion” to a range of surfaces. As a finished tag, Skyline’s surface is printable with thermal transfer printers.

The RFID tag can be used for tracking metallic assets, items and components in industrial environments such as automotive, mechanical engineering and aviation. Smartrac’s Skyline inlays and tags comply with VDA recommendations for the automotive industry and supported by the leading automation companies globally.

Smartrac and identytag completed initial product volumes and will be ramping up production in the second half of the year 2019.
