NFC tags can be used on metallic surfaces

Flexible, ferrite-based NFC inlays and tags in the Block On-Metal range by Smartrac Technology group are suitable for items with metallic surfaces need to be identified or interacted with.

The tags can be used on industrial, retail and business to consumer (B2C) applications where metallic surfaces need to be identified or interacted with.

The Block On-Metal tags combine an antenna design with a thin layer of flexible ferrite material, which isolates the magnetic field from the metal surface. Ferrite redirects the reader’s inductive field and prevents energy from being wasted as heat within the metallic surface.

They can be used for industrial, retail and consumer, asset management, brand protection, secure product authentication, and payment. They can also be used for the identification and provision of a digital identity to many items – from metallic components to spare parts, signs, tools, even machines and domestic items. The tags have a die cut size of 50 x 50mm (1.96 x 1.96-inches) for the standard tag. Block On-Metal tags are suitable for roll-to-roll manufacturing processes, which makes onward processing much easier and more cost-effective, and allows converters to overprint the inlays if required.

Block On-Metal tags are equipped with the newest member of NXP’s Slix product family, the ICode Slix2 IC. This chip complies with the NFC Forum Type 5 standard, is backwards-compatible to Slix and offers an increased user memory size. It also has NXP originality signature, increased speed for inventory management, and increased read range due to superior resistance to detuning effects. Additional notable features of the ICode Slix2 IC are flexible user memory segmentation with separate access conditions, a password-protected on-chip service cycle counter and a 2.5kbit user memory size.

Block On-Metal will become available in high volumes from Q4 2019.

LED driver futureproofs with distortion-cancelling technology

Featuring a distortion cancelling input current shaping (ICS) circuit, the HVLED007 AC/DC LED driver enables energy-saving solid-state luminaires to comply with increasingly stringent lighting regulations, says STMicroelectronics.

The HVLED007 implements a peak current mode power factor control (PFC) control optimised for isolated high-power-factor quasi-resonant flyback converters. The ICS ensures an effectively sinusoidal input waveform with very low total harmonic distortion (THD) over the full load and input-voltage range, confirms ST. THD is below five per cent at full load. With near-unity power-factor capability and maximum energy efficiency over 90 per cent, the HVLED007 can be used for a single control IC to address multiple medium- and high-power LED-lighting applications up to 80W.

The HVLED007 is part of the HVLED family of digital ICs for driving LEDs directly from the rectified mains. The members are characterised by integration and support for economical primary-side regulation to lower the bill-of-materials costs and compact circuit size while enhancing system reliability and lighting performance, according to ST.

The electrical parameters of the HVLED007 are specified down to -40 degrees C, allowing use in outdoor lighting including street lighting as well as indoor applications. The totem-pole output stage can source and sink 600mA and 800mA respectively, enabling use in EN61000-3-2 compliant switched-mode power supplies up to 100W in addition to lighting applications. There is also short-circuit, overload, and over-voltage protection integrated in the HVLED007.

The HVLED007 is in production now in the industry-standard SO8 small-outline package.

Isolated technology driver maximises power efficiency for industry 4.0

Analog Devices claims to maximise efficiency and minimise electromagnetic (EM) emissions of motion systems as customers migrate to higher density automation, at the launch of the ADuM4122 isolated, dual-drive strength output driver. It uses iCoupler technology.

Improvements in motor efficiency can improve economic and environmental benefits in industrial automation and IoT within smart factories, reports Analog Devices.

The ADuM4122 is designed to satisfy the growing demand for intelligent technology and features within systems. It accomplishes this by controlling how fast or slow a MOSFET or IGBT turns on or off by user command, on the fly, to control motor currents, says Analog Devices.

Mack Lund, director of the Interface and Isolation Technology Group at Analog Devices explains that users can dynamically move from a slower to a faster switching transition, optimising EM emissions without sacrificing efficiency. “In short, you no longer have to leave performance on the table when trying to achieve lower emissions and power consumption,” he said.

The ADuM4122 is a simple dual-drive strength output driver that efficiently toggles between two slew rates controlled by a digital signal. It is in an eight-pin SOIC, making it smaller than existing discrete or complex integrated solutions that have 20 or more pins, says Analog Devices.

An evaluation board is also available.

The ADuM4122 further improves system capabilities with high common-mode transient immunity and low propagation delay for high performance applications such as motion control, robotics and energy.

IoT gateway with Raspberry Pi accelerates adoption, says Farnell

Distributor, Farnell, is now shipping the Avnet SmartEdge industrial IoT gateway. The low-cost industrial gateway is powered by Raspberry Pi and is designed for a range of applications, including building management, vehicle monitoring, industrial automation and predictive maintenance.

The Avnet SmartEdge industrial IoT gateway’s seamless, secure connectivity is enabled by Avnet’s IoTConnect platform to provide features to gather, analyse and provide actionable, real-time data visualisation. The IoTConnect platform runs on Microsoft Azure edge-to-cloud services to build, deploy, and manage IoT connected assets.

The gateway provides connectivity with data intelligence for a range of industrial 4.0 applications including additional ports to handle industrial protocols, higher power input range, a trusted computing module for comprehensive end-to-end hardware data security, and a robust wall or DIN-rail mountable metal enclosure.

Connectivity options include a full set of industrial peripherals which include CAN-BUS and RS-232/ 485 (Modbus and DeviceNet) interfaces, isolated digital I/O and dual 10/100 Ethernet, with wireless connectivity including WiFi at 2.4GHz and Bluetooth Low Energy 4.2 via an integrated antenna with external connectivity, and an mPCIe interface for cellular modems. Power is via a 12 to 24V DC input and an HDMI display output is also incorporated. It is based on an 8Gbyte EMMC which replaces the standard SD memory card, with security guaranteed by an onboard TPM 2.0.

The device also has the 40-pin expansion header to link with a range of devices from the ecosystem of HATs and other accessories.

Those familiar with prototyping on a Raspberry Pi device will find it straightforward to bring their designs to an industrial environment without having to switch platforms, Farnell reassures developers.

Hari Kalyanaraman, global head of single board computers at Farnell said of the Avnet SmartEdge industrial IoT gateway: “Ease of use and seamless, secure connectivity make it ideal for developing industrial automation applications such as remote monitoring, predictive maintenance, process control and automation. . .  we believe this device could be a key driver in the further adoption of Industrial IoT applications.”

Pete Bartolotta, president of business transformation at Avnet, said: “The Avnet SmartEdge industrial IoT gateway will allow developers to design and scale IoT projects leveraging the familiar Raspberry Pi platform that’s now industrialised for scale.” He added that the Avnet and Farnell ecosystem provides the technology, support and tools developers need to bring IoT projects from prototyping to mass m market volumes.
