αMOS5 super junction MOSFET series for high-efficiency and high-density needs 

Alpha and Omega Semiconductor has announced the 600V low ohmic and fast body diode αMOS5 super junction MOSFET series. αMOS5 is AOS’s latest generation of high-voltage MOSFET, designed to meet the high-efficiency and high-density needs for quick charger, adapter, PC power, server, industrial power, telecom and hyperscale datacentre applications.

The AOK040A60 is a 600V 40m-Ohm aMOS5 low ohmic device with the industry-standard TO-247 package tailored to address the thermal challenges of high-power AC/DC, DC/DC and Inverter stages. 

As the EU ERP Lot9 regulation pushes the efficiency of single power supply units to titanium level, AOS aMOS5 600V low ohmic family offers a solution for single, interleaved, dual boost, totem-pole, and Vienna PFCs, as well as other hard-switching topologies. The 40mOhm product, followed by the upcoming 31mOhm, 65mOhm, and 80mOhm products, aims to provide customers with multiple choices to deal with different power ratings and efficiency requirements. The optimised capacitance of AOK040A60 offers hard and soft switching performances, with fast turn-on/turn-off behaviours while avoiding the risks of self-turn-on or shoot-through.

The AOK042A60FD is a 600V 42mOhm fast body diode device, designed to handle the repetitive hard commutation scenario, where the MOSFETs freewheeling body diode is reversely recovered in half-bridge or full-bridge topologies. The aMOS5 600V FRD solution is expected to further increase the system reliability as a solution for HB/FB topologies where hard switching happens during abnormal operations, such as short-circuit or start-up transients. The low Qrr of AOK042A60FD is expected to help to significantly reduce the losses during reverse recovery. 

Besides server and telecom power supplies, the AOK040A60, AOK042A60FD and their derivatives will also target the demanding EV DC charging and solar inverter applications.   

The 600V aMOS5 family will be expanded, including more low-ohmic and FRD products arriving early next year. As with most of the aMOS5 products, these new devices will also be made in 300mm facilities, with the intention of providing better supply elasticity during the global power semiconductor shortages.

RDK2 development kit aids proof of concepts

Marketed as a complete solution for firmware and hardware developers, the RDK2 development kit from Rutronik, this modular toolkit uses the PSoC62 microcontroller from Infineon Cypress and provides a solution for applications in Internet of Things (IoT), Industrial IoT (IIoT), smart wearables and smart home. 

The toolkit is particularly suitable for the development of proof of concepts.

It offers numerous useful features as well as interfaces and has exceptional flexibility also in terms of application options. The board uses the PSoC62 from Infineon Cypress for this purpose. The microcontroller has a dual-core CPU and suits secure edge computing and cloud applications. The PSoC62 features an integrated power management IC for SMPS and all connected power supplies.

The butterfly design allows improved handling. That ensures user-friendly access to the Arduino connectors and reduces possible interference from electromagnetic influences, especially with RF IoT Arduino Shields. For testing the analogue-to-digital conversion, an integrated potentiometer is available. As a special feature users have access to all PSoC62 pins via the Arduino headers. Additionally, a capacitive sensing technology called Cap Sense is included. It enables a touch surface that serves as a slider.

Arrow Electronics camera modules enable plug-and-play addition of vision capabilities to extensive range of embedded applications

Based on sensor technology from Onsemi, Arrow Electronics’ family of plug-and-play camera modules provide original equipment manufacturers with the means to incorporate a wide range of camera functionalities into their products. Target application areas include artificial intelligence (AI) and machine vision, low-power Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and commercial and consumer security products. 

Arrow worked with Shiratech Solutions to create the camera mezzanine cards compliant with the 96Boards specification. Each module is based on a CMOS image sensor from Onsemi with a different set of capabilities, enabling users to select functionality depending on their specific product requirements. Each mezzanine is also equipped with the Onsemi AP1302 image signal processor (ISP). If the main processor does not have an integrated ISP, this IC takes over functionalities including sensor configuration and calibration, image format conversion, basic transformations, and autofocus. 

The AP1302 supports Onsemi image sensors up to 13 MP, providing wide flexibility for developers.

The SRT-Vision96-AR0430 mezzanine board features an Onsemi AR0430 sensor-based 4MP resolution, full-colour (RGB) 120 FPS camera with an 80 degrees field of view and focus range from 10cm to infinity. Target applications include consumer appliances, AI vision and access control. For IoT applications requiring low power consumption and fast recording speeds, the SRT-Vision 96-ARX3A0 uses the ARX3A0 0.3 MP 360 fps monochrome sensor. 

The current line-up is completed by the SRT-VISION96-AR1335, which offers a 13 MP, 60 fps RGB camera and is designed for digital still camera, AI vision and body cameras. By working with camera module suppliers Appletec, Basler and Leopard Imaging, Arrow provides developers with a range of imaging solutions that can be added to embedded hardware without the need for specialist expertise or long development cycles. 

The Arrow camera mezzanines can be plugged directly into compatible 96Boards baseboards and, together with the accompanying driver and board support package, provide all the elements necessary to create a proof of concept.

SiFive claims best-in-class performance for P650 processor

RISC-V designs for high performance applications in data centres, automotive, computing and mobile applications will benefit from the P650 RISC-V IP core, says SiFive.

The IP will be available to lead partners in Q1 2022. 

The introduction is in response to the industry’s call for more processor IP choices, says SiFive’s co-founder and CTO, Dr. Yunsup Lee. “The SiFive Performance P650 processor IP . . . . delivering significant performance improvements in record time. . . is the next step towards our long-term vision of bringing RISC-V processors to all performance-hungry applications,” he said. 

The SiFive Performance P650 processor builds upon the SiFive Performance P550 processor, therefore maintaining an efficient core pipeline while expanding the processor instruction-issue width to deliver a 40 per cent performance increase per clock cycle. Additional architecture enhancements improve maximum clock frequency, achieving an overall 50 per cent performance gain compared to SiFive’s previous fastest processor. 

With a projected score of 11+ SPECInt/GHz, the SiFive Performance P650 brings RISC-V into a new category of high-end computing applications, says SiFive. It is scalable to 16 cores using a coherent multi-core complex, and includes platform-level memory management and interrupt control units. It also supports the new RISC-V hypervisor extension for virtualisation. 

Steve Leibson, Principal Analyst at TIRIAS Research, commented: “The company’s announced plans for 16-core, coherent processor complexes based on this IP will deliver considerable computing performance and requires the commitment of significant development resources, which are simply out of reach for many other companies playing in the RISC-V processor IP arena.”

The SiFive Performance P650 Architecture Preview will be offered to lead customers in Q1 of 2022 with general availability coming mid-year.
