Socionext Introduces New 7nm ADC and DAC for 5G Direct RF Transmitters and Receivers

Socionext, a global leader in providing innovative custom System-on-Chip solutions for various applications including data center and networking,

launches a new high-speed Direct RF data converter PHY solution. This is the latest in a series of IP offerings driving advanced transceiver systems for 3GPP 5GNR/LTE and Wi-Fi network infrastructure in the FR1 and FR2 (mmWave with external mixers) bands.

The IPs were developed in TSMC 7nm FinFET (N7) process technology to allow straightforward integration for 32TRX and 64TRX single-die solutions and lower power consumption compared to discrete solutions currently available in the market.

Both ADC and DAC have 12-bit resolution and analog bandwidth up to 7.2GHz. The ADC sampling rate is 24GS/s and 32GS/s for the DAC, enabling 5GNR FR1 frequency in the first Nyquist data converter frequency range.

This Direct RF IP product family delivers the full sub-6GHz instantaneous band with an internal capability to allocate up to 1.6GHz of channel bandwidth featuring carrier aggregation.  The maximum is 16 channels of 100MHz (FR1) each or 4 channels of 400MHz (FR2). Furthermore, by using the multiple DDC/DUC available in the macros, it is possible to target low-, mid- and high-range bands (e.g., n28, n40 and n78) simultaneously, without dedicated external filtering components. The result is a significantly reduced BOM.

Yutaka Hayashi, Corporate Senior Vice President and Head of BU (Data Center & Networking Business Unit) said: “Socionext’s new 7nm Direct RF silicon IPs are available for new product designs and mass production with a guaranteed short time-to-market made possible by Socionext’s global solid post-silicon supply chain. The Direct RF test chip and evaluation board are now sampling to select customers. A dedicated application board with full ADC/DAC and real-time streaming will be available in Q3, 2023”.

SoC Integration

The complete Socionext SoC solution includes a foundation of IP building blocks such as short, medium and long reach SerDes up to 112/224Gbps, PCIe Gen4/5/6 PHY, eFPGA, DDR and several standards-based, die-to-die interconnect technologies for managing data flow across the data infrastructure and chiplets on MCM.

This 7nm data-converter development follows numerous successful 16nm and 28nm designs using Socionext’s high-performance ADC and DAC design expertise for networking applications.

Socionext integrates these IPs into other solutions such as 5G CPE, satellite communications, software-defined radio, microwave radio, test & measurement equipment and early 6G research. In a market that requires high levels of system integration, small package size and low power design, Socionext’s Solutions are key differentiators for telecommunication and connectivity customers and for the most demanding environments utilizing expertise in leading-edge silicon technology and design methodology.

A Paper on the Direct RF ADC (Analog-to-Digital) converter was presented at the ISSCC in San Francisco. https://www.isscc.org – “A 750mW 24GS/s 12b Time-interleaved ADC for Direct RF Sampling in Modern Wireless Systems”.

Hailo claims AI-centric vision processor is a first for intelligent cameras

For cameras used in intelligent, connected areas, such as smart cities, factories and retail locations, the Hailo-15 vision processor units (VPUs) are believed to be the first designed for integration directly into intelligent cameras. According to Hailo, they deliver unprecedented video processing and analytics at the edge and redefine the smart cameras with a new standard in computer vision and deep learning video processing.

Hailo-15-empowered cameras can carry out significantly more video analytics, running several AI tasks in parallel including faster detection at high resolution to enable identification of smaller and more distant objects with higher accuracy and less false alarms.

As an example, the Hailo-15H is capable of running the object detection model YoloV5M6 with high input resolution (1280 x 1280) at real time sensor rate, or the industry classification model benchmark, ResNet-50, at 700 frames per second.

This will enable, for example, smart city authorities can more quickly detect and respond to incidents. Another example is that manufacturers can increase productivity and machine uptime, retailers can protect supply chains and improve customer satisfaction and transportation authorities can recognise incidents such as lost children, traffic accidents and misplaced luggage.

The Hailo-15 VPU family includes the Hailo-15H, Hailo-15M, and Hailo-15L which have varying processing levels and price points, ranging from 7Toperations per second to 20T operations per second. The VPU family enables over five times higher performance than currently available solutions in the market, at a comparable price point, claimed Hailo. All three Hailo-15 VPUs support multiple input streams at 4K resolution and combine a powerful CPU and DSP subsystems with Hailo’s AI core.

As well as vision-based transformers in cameras for real time object detection, the added AI capacity can be used for video enhancement and to improve video quality in low-light environments, for video stabilisation and high dynamic range performance.

Hailo-15-empowered cameras lower the total cost of ownership in massive camera deployments by offloading cloud analytics to save video bandwidth and processing, while improving overall privacy due to data anonymisation at the edge, explained Hailo. The result is an ultra-high-quality AI-based video analytics solution that keeps people safer, while ensuring their privacy and allows organizations to operate more efficiently, at a lower cost and complexity of network infrastructure.

“Hailo-15 represents a significant step forward in making AI at the edge more scalable and affordable,” stated Orr Danon, Hailo’s CEO.

“With a single software stack for all our product families, camera designers, application developers, and integrators can now benefit from an easy and cost-effective deployment supporting more AI, more video analytics, higher accuracy, and faster inference time, exactly where they’re needed,” he added.

RDK3 baseboard provides proof of concepts for IoT

Rutronik System Solutions has developed the RDK3 baseboard, designed for engineers developing their own proof-of-concepts for Bluetooth connectivity. It shortens time-to-market for a variety of IoT applications, including advanced robotics, smart buildings, smart factories and healthcare.

It features Infineon’s PSoC 64 secured microcontroller, enabling the implementation of security features. There is also the ability to integrate Rutronik System Solutions’ software into Infineon’s ModusToolbox.

Advanced robotics, smart buildings and factories and healthcare applications require wireless, intelligent networking of individual elements or work processes. Networked systems allow work steps and objects to be intelligently connected and interact with each other, explained Rutronik, for efficiency gains. The RDK3 baseboard is for wireless, low power Bluetooth connections with high security standards and low power consumption, said the company. It enables hardware and firmware developers to reduce time and costs in the pre-development phase and makes a significant contribution to bringing new applications much faster to market.

The RDK3 relies on Infineon’s PSoC 64 secured microcontroller with a Platform Security Architecture (PSA). The dual-core microcontroller features three-level hardware and firmware-based isolation. The Arm Dual-Cortex M-Core SoC provides a secure M0+core and performs all security functions. It is physically separated from the user applications running in parallel on the Arm Cortex-M4 core, with the main functions to build and authenticate secure applications the responsibility of the base board.

The RDK3 has Arduino interfaces and is easy to combine with other adapter boards like HMS Anybus, Text To Speech, RAB1, and RAB2. In addition, all components used are from Rutronik’s product portfolio, ensuring the availability of all parts.

Rutronik Elektronische Bauelemente was founded in 1973 and is an independent family-owned company based in Ispringen, Germany. Today it is one of the world’s leading broadline distributors with more than 1,800 employees and serving over 40,000 customers. It has more than 80 offices worldwide and logistics centres in Austin (Texas), Shanghai, Singapore, and Hong Kong, for customer support in Europe, Asia, and North America.
