Segger announces Embedded Studio for M1, Apple’s Arm-based SoC

Shortly after Apple announced its first Arm-based SoC, the Apple M1, Segger released a version of its Embedded Studio cross-platform integrated development environment (IDE) for Arm/Cortex and RISC-V.

The Apple M1 SoC is designed specifically for Mac use. It can execute applications for Intel x86-based CPUs using Apple’s Rosetta 2 translator, although applications built specifically for the M1 core execute much faster and use less power.

To optimise the speed and performance potential of a natively compiled application, Segger has created a build of Embedded Studio for M1. There are now two macOS packages available, one for the Intel x86-64 and one for the Apple M1.

“The Embedded Studio build for the Apple M1 is truly cutting-edge,” says Ivo Geilenbrügge, Segger’s managing director. “This is the first commercial embedded system IDE optimised for the M1,” he confirmed.

Segger Microcontroller has over 28 years of experience in embedded computer systems, producing software libraries, and offering a full set of hardware tools (for development and production) and software tools.

Segger provides an RTOS and a complete spectrum of software libraries including communication, security, data compression and storage, user interface software and more.

Segger’s professional software libraries and tools for embedded system development are designed for resource-constrained embedded systems. Sesoftware is not covered by an open-source or required-attribution license and can be integrated in any commercial or proprietary product, without the obligation to disclose the combined source

Segger was founded by Rolf Segger in 1992. The privately held company has a US office in the Boston area and branch operations in Silicon Valley and the UK, with distributors on most continents.

IQD updates IQRB-1 rubidium oscillator for smart synchronisation

The IQRB-1 rubidium oscillator was introduced eight years ago and has been used in synchronisation systems across the world. After elaborate testing, IQD has compiled a comprehensive handbook summarising an extensive range of tests and results, for customers. The standard and customised tests were performed at the IQD test and design facilities in the UK. IQD is a subsidiary of the Würth Elektronik eiSos Group.

Connectivity of people, machines, applications and devices rely on accurate timing for smooth operation. IQD’s IQRB-1 contributes accuracy in the short term and long term stability for the worldwide timing infrastructure, says the company. It is suitable as a frequency and timing reference, for example for communication base stations, broadcasting or industrial equipment.

In addition to the IQRB-1, IQD’s rubidium oscillator portfolio includes recent additions, the ICPT-1 and the IQRB-4.

IQD has over 40 years’ experience in the manufacture of frequency products. It is part of the Würth Elektronik eiSos Group, the European manufacturer of passive components. IQD has active customers in over 80 countries, and claims to offer one of the most comprehensive frequency product ranges available, from low cost commercial grade products to those used in high reliability industrial and automotive applications including quartz crystals, clock oscillators, AEC-Q200 crystals and oscillators, VCXOs, TCXOs, OCVCSOs  and OCXOs, GPS disciplined OCXOs and rubidium oscillators.

Würth Elektronik eiSos Group is a manufacturer of electronic and electromechanical components for the electronics industry. The technology company is one of the largest European manufacturers of passive components and is active in 50 countries. Production sites in Europe, Asia and North America supply a growing number of customers worldwide.

The product range includes EMC components, inductors, transformers, RF components, varistors, capacitors, resistors, quartz crystals, oscillators, power modules, wireless power transfer, LEDs, sensors, connectors, power supply elements, switches, push-buttons, connection technology, fuse holders and solutions for wireless data transmission.

Catalogues components are available from stock without minimum order quantity, and the company offers free samples and extensive support through technical sales staff and selection tools.

Würth Elektronik is part of the Würth Group, the specialist in assembly and fastening technology.

Updated R-Car V3H aids deep learning performance for smart camera apps

Renesas Electronics has updated its R-Car V3H system-on-chip (SoC) to improve deep learning performance for smart camera applications, such as driver and occupant monitoring systems, automotive front cameras, surround view and auto parking for high-volume vehicles up to Level 2+.

The updated SoC performs sensor fusion using an architecture optimised for smart computer vision and supporting safety certification up to ASIL C for the real-time control domain. The device offers original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and Tier 1s a high-performance, low-power solution that supports the latest NCAP 2020 requirements.

Building on the recognition technology introduced with the R-Car V3H in 2018 which integrated IP for convolutional neural networks (CNN), the updated R-Car V3H preserves full hardware and software compatibility but delivers four times the performance for CNN processing compared to the earlier version and achieves up to overall 7.2 TOPS throughput, including 3.7 TOPS for CNN functions, with optimised performance-to-power balance.

By supporting safety goals up to ASIL C in the real-time control domain, the design of the R-Car V3H removes the need for an external safety microcontroller (MCU) to manage sensor fusion and final-decision actions. Designed to support ASIL B goals in the sensor layer and on-chip applications processors, the SoC can be incorporated into systems that require ASIL D certification at the system level.

The R-Car V3H features a suite of IPs that support the perception stack, and enable sensor fusion involving radar, Lidar and cameras, as well as integrating a full set of automotive peripherals including CAN, Ethernet AVB, and Flexray.

Mass production of the updated R-Car V3H is planned for first quarter of 2022.

A global leader in microcontrollers, analogue, power, and SoC products, Renesas provides solutions for a broad range of automotive, industrial, Infrastructure, and IoT applications.

Anglia partners with Sensirion for innovative sensor solutions

Anglia Components has expanded its sensor portfolio with the environmental and flow sensors from Sensirion, manufacturer of digital microsensors and systems. Anglia says the sensors will enhance its customer designs across a range of industrial and new emerging markets, such as Internet of Things sensing applications.

Commenting on the partnership, John Bowman, marketing director, Anglia, said: “We have invested in an inventory profile and evaluation/development kits to assist customers with new designs, all of which are available with no minimum order quantity via Anglia Live. Our engineers have been fully trained on Sensirion’s products and are ready to assist customers with their design-in.”

Sensirion’s environmental sensors measure key environmental parameters, such as ambient humidity and temperature, volatile organic compounds, carbon dioxide and particulate matter. Their digital multi-pixel gas sensors are designed for easy integration into air treatment and monitoring devices. One of the features of Sensirion products is the use of its CMOSens technology, which allows for intelligent system integration of the sensor element, logic, calibration data and digital interface on a single chip.

The sensors can be used in intelligent household appliances, smart homes, medical applications and as well as a meant to help improve air quality. Control of air quality is thought to be crucial in combatting covid and making buildings safe for employees to return to when advised.

Sensirion’s line up of flow sensors can measure a wide range of gases and liquids. The range also includes gas meter modules, differential pressure sensors, mass flow meters for gases as well as support for customer specific solutions.

“We are pleased to announce Anglia as a new distributor. This strong new partnership will allow us to expand our reach in the UK,” said Florian Hirsch, director channel sales, Sensirion.  “Anglia already has an excellent network of customers who can now benefit from our sensor portfolio. We at Sensirion are looking forward to this collaboration.”
