Nano-6064 embedded board uses AI

The Nano-6064 Nano-ITX embedded board has been developed by Portwell Europe and is based around the Intel Atom x7000E series processors, the Intel processor N series and Intel Core i3 N-series processors. According to Portwell Europe, it empowers IoT edge use cases with AI and real time computing. The Nano-6064 is suitable for healthcare, retail, digital signage and automation applications.

The Nano-ITX form factor measures 120 x 120mm. The processors feature AI acceleration and real time computing with power efficiency, said Portwell. They are tuned for deep learning inference, greater graphics capabilities, hardware virtualisation support and manageability and security, said Portwell. As a result, the Nano-6064 is suitable for a range of IoT edge applications. European Portwell Technology PR-03/2023

The Nano-6064 supports fanless design and, the first time, users can scale up to Intel Core i3 computing within an N-series platform for up to 3.8GHz maximum turbo frequency. The flat / low profile design saves space in system configuration in digital display and compact workstations, such as digital signage and control for use cases in industrial automation and healthcare.

The Portwell Nano-6064 supports non-ECC DDR4 3200MTransfers per second SO-DIMM socket equipped with up to 16Gbyte capacity. Intel UHD graphics are driven by the Intel Xe architecture with up to 32 executive units (EUs) and triple independent displays via DisplayPort, HDMI, and LVDS interfaces.

It also has four USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports for efficient data transmission. There is also support for one M.2 E key and one M.2 B key sockets for system expansions including wireless modules and storage devices. The Nano-6064 is also equipped with dual 2.5GbE LAN connectivity via two RJ-45 ports with Intel TSN (time sensitive networking) and Intel time co-ordinated computing (TCC) technologies to enhance real time computing and processing capabilities.

Portwell is an Associate member of the Intel Internet of Things Solutions Alliance. The company designs and manufactures a range of IPC products (SBC, backplane, redundant power supply, rack mount and node chassis), embedded architecture solutions, DVR system platforms and communications appliances. It also provides complete R&D and project management services to decrease time to market and reduce project risk and cost.

Portwell is also an ISO 13485, ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 -certified company that deploys quality assurance through product design, verification and manufacturing cycles.

Chipset for 5G mobile devices is latest member of Semtech PerSe family

Semtech has expanded its PerSe product portfolio with the PerSe Connect SX9376 IC which is purpose built for 5G mobile devices.

Semtech’s PerSe technology senses human proximity and enables end devices such as smartphones to implement radio frequency (RF) control. The PerSe Connect SX9376 enables designers to optimise RF performance, enhance connectivity and support elevated compliance with global specific absorption rate (SAR) standards for 5G-enabled consumer devices.

Semtech’s PerSe intelligent sensors are used in the connected device market. They enable automatic adjustment of system level RF emissions in connected devices such as smartphones, tablets, hotspots and laptops for them to operate at peak performance while maintaining compliance, explained Semtech.

By 2030, the global 5G market is expected to grow at a 47.6 per cent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) with a market valuation of $198.44 billion. To bring these 5G-enabled products to market, OEMs must add more RF antennas into the design to address the frequency increase. The additional antennas can make it challenging for OEMs to address global SAR compliance and accurately manage the device’s RF power, explained Semtech. The SX9376 has a maximum of eight sensor inputs to support multiple antennas and simplify the sensor design without compromising performance and regulation. The chipset is also compatible with various antenna designs, making it easy to integrate into the latest 5G mobile devices, explained Semtech.

Semtech PerSe Connect 9376’s sensing performance is enabled by a high-resolution analogue front end (AFE) down to 0.74aF. It can support antenna designs with up to 600pF capacitance and is robust with advanced temperature correction to minimise false triggers caused by noise and temperature.

Environmental sensor development kit by RS Group is certified by OSHWA

Advanced and customisable sensor-based hardware in DesignSpark Environmental Sensor development kit (ESDK) has been certified by the Open-Source Hardware Association (OSHWA). Open-source hardware is a term for physical objects whose design has been released to allow anyone to make, modify, distribute and use.

The aims of the OSHWA are to foster technological knowledge and encourage research that is accessible, collaborative and respects user freedom. The OSHWA certification awarded to RS DesignSpark’s ESDK recognises that the kit meets a uniform and well-defined standard for open-source compliance. The certification provides users with the knowledge that the definition of open-source hardware used by a specific project matches the community definition of open-source hardware.

The ESDK has been developed as part of RS DesignSpark’s #ActivistEngineering campaign. It is an advanced open-source and cloud-connected platform that makes it easy to prototype custom sensor-based solutions, said RS Group.

DesignSpark is RS’ fast-growing online community for engineers, which offers a suite of design tools, development kits such as the ESDK, comprehensive 2D/3D and electronics part libraries, and a host of design resources including technical articles, projects, and community forums.

The ESDK can be used in design projects based on air quality measurement for example. The ESDK can also be deployed in many scenarios including IoT applications that need a small Linux computer with an integrated touchscreen and GPS capability, said RS.

Mike Bray, vice-president of DesignSpark at RS, said the open-source ESDK has “energised the DesignSpark community to develop many innovative projects based on measurement of air quality around the globe. These projects are free to everyone and are designed to help deliver affordable solutions and make the planet more sustainable,” he added.

DesignSpark has made all the design project files for the ESDK available free of charge at https://github.com/DesignSparkRS/ESDK

RS Group is an omni-channel industrial product and service solutions provider to customers who are involved in designing, building and maintaining industrial equipment and operations, safely and sustainably. The company stocks more than 700,000 industrial and electronic products, sourced from over 2,500 leading suppliers and provides a wide range of product and service solutions to over 1.2 million customers. It has operations in 32 countries, trades through multiple channels and ships over 60,000 parcels a day.
