Adapter board reduces pre-development, says Rutronik

Rutronik System Solutions has added to its adapter board range with the RAB2 for CO2 sensing.

The board uses a PASCO2V01 CO2 sensor from Infineon and a SCD41-D CO2 sensor from Sensirion. Both compact sensors operate on a photoacoustic measuring principle. Using the board, it is possible to test both sensors separately and compare them to each other in the pre-development phase of a project and enables developers to evaluate which sensor is most suitable for a particular application in the field of CO2, relative humidity, and temperature measurement.

According to Rutronik, the combination of the components on only one board means that a faster time to market can be realised.

CO2 measurements play an increasingly important role in the development of applications. For example, there is a growing demand for smart sensors to measure indoor air quality to ensure real-time CO2 monitoring for ventilation systems, air purifiers, and thermostats and prevent, among other things, harmful, excessive CO2 concentration.

Stephan Menze, head of global innovation management at Rutronik, said: “Rutronik System Solutions’ central focus is to support customers in the pre-development phase. That saves resources and shortens the time to market. . . . . By combining two advanced sensors on one board, tests and comparisons are easily possible. [The RAB2 for CO2 sensing] board provides a reliable basis for deciding which component fits best for the final application development.

Like all other boards from Rutronik System Solutions, the Adapter Board – RAB2 for CO2 Sensing features an Arduino interface. That means that the board can easily combine with already developed boards such as the RDK2, Rutronik Adapter Board – Text To Speech, Rutronik Adapter Board – HMS Anybus, and the Rutronik Adapter Board – RAB1 Sensorfusion and embedded in a complex evaluation system.

Rutronik System Solutions also provide the corresponding software stacks. All components featured on the board are available in Rutronik’s product portfolio, ensuring the components are currently and long-term available.

Murata’s Type 2AB UWB Bluetooth modules are available from Rutronik

Small, wideband modules by Murata combine low power consumption and accurate results for compact, battery powered IoT devices.

The Type 2AB UWB + Bluetooth Low Energy wideband modules measure 10.5 x 8.3 x 1.44mm. They use short range radio frequency technology to enable a wide range of applications including healthcare, wearables, smart lighting, smart factory, real time locations systems (RTLS), asset tracking and digital payments.

The modules integrate a Nordic IC nRF52840 which is claimed to improve design flexibility and reduce product development time by eliminating external MCUs. There is a 256kbyte RAM and 1Mbyte flash memory, a 250nA deep sleep mode with Bluetooth Low Energy function and a three-axis sensor for motion detection. It also integrates a reference clock for UWB (ultra wideband) and MCU.

The module’s PCB mounting area is significantly reduced compared to the layout of separate UWB and BLE ICs, said Rutronik. The design also supports additional component integration. The regulatory-certified module is also claimed to minimise development time for adding UWB functionality into end products.

The multi-antenna design consists of three antenna ports available on the component, one for Bluetooth Low Energy and two for UWB for the phase difference of arrival (PDoA) function.

The connectivity module has an operating temperature of -40 to +85 degrees C and a voltage of 2.5 to 3.6V. It also supports channels five and nine for global deployment. Transmit power, antenna delays and frequencies are calibrated for each device.

Adapter board allows machine learning based sensor fusion

The latest addition to Rutronik System Solutions’ board family is the RAB1 – Sensorfusion. The adapter board offers its own platform that allows machine learning (ML) -based sensor fusion, which forms the basis and the future of artificial intelligence (AI).

It is equipped with sensors from Infineon, Bosch SE and Sensirion. (All sensors are also available in Rutronik’s product portfolio.)

It can be used as a development tool to shorten time to market for a range of applications of sensor fusion, such as air quality measurement or smoke and gas detectors.

Combining and linking different measured values from several sensors, or sensor fusion, is important to gain information, explained Rutronik. The RAB1 Sensorfusion board allows developers to test and select the most suitable components or combination of sensors for an application. The board features the DPS310 barometric air pressure sensor from Infineon, the BMI270 IMU and the BME688 intelligent gas sensor from Bosch Sensortec and the SGP40-D-R4 and the SHT41-AD1B-R2 temperature and humidity sensor from Sensirion. These components can be tested individually or in combination using the board. Rutronik System Solutions provides the software including various application examples. It also has an Arduino interface for use with all other boards, including the Rutronik Basis Board RDK2.

Rutronik Elektronische Bauelemente was founded in 1973 and is an independent family-owned company.

The broad product portfolio includes semiconductors, passive and electromechanical components as well as embedded boards, storage and displays, and wireless products. The company has product areas in the Rutronik Automotive, Rutronik Embedded, Rutronik Power and Rutornik Smart divisions with both specific products and services tailored to the respective applications.
