Skyworks expands smart switches with Si834x and Si830x models

Two smart switches from Skyworks extend the company’s portfolio. The Si834x isolated smart switch and the Si830x smart switch are the latest additions to Skyworks’ isolation portfolio which is used in a varied range of applications, including industrial automation, transportation systems, home entertainment electronics and medical systems.

The Si834x devices provide up to four isolated high- or low-side switches with low on state switch resistance. They are suitable for driving resistive and inductive loads including solenoids, relays and lamps commonly found in industrial control systems such as programmable logic controllers (PLC). Each switch is galvanically isolated for safety using Skyworks’ CMOS based isolation technology.

The Si834x switches are robust and flexible load drivers and are capable of providing up to 0.5A of IEC61131-2 compliant continuous current in a quad channel configuration, or up to 2.5A of continuous current in a single channel configuration.

Each switch can detect an open circuit condition and is protected against over-current, over-voltage from demagnetisation (inductive kick or flyback voltage), and over-temperature conditions.

An innovative multi-voltage smart clamp is used to efficiently handle an unlimited amount of demagnetisation energy, confirmed Skyworks. The Si834x over-current protection includes an inrush current mode on select products, allowing the switch to drive challenging loads such as lamps and DC motors. The device power supplies are monitored and the switches are safely constrained or shutdown if a fault is detected

The second introduction is the Si830x switches, which are designed for driving resistive and inductive loads like solenoids, relays and lamps commonly found in industrial control systems like programmable logic controllers (PLCs). They are easily interfaced directly to a microcontroller, or controlled through a digital isolator or optocoupler-based isolation barrier, said the company.

The logic interface supports low power 2.5 to 5.0V microcontrollers and is powered by the switch’s high voltage field power supply. The field power supply supports a wide supply range, from 9.0 to 32V, for industrial voltage levels. The switches are capable of providing 0.7A under any valid load condition. A multi-voltage clamp efficiently handles an unlimited amount of demagnetisation energy. Each switch offers fault protection and has over-current protection based on power estimation to keep the device cool and operational, even during a short circuit event. Additionally, the device power supplies are monitored, and the switches are safely constrained or shutdown on faults.

Three diagnostics are reported through an active-low, open-drain fault indicator pin. It can be connected to an LED for instant user feedback, connected to a microcontroller for advanced software control, or tied together with additional fault pins from other devices to simplify user feedback or reduce board layout complexity.

Vibration-tolerant MEMS gyroscope positions aircraft

A high stability and vibration-tolerant digital MEMS gyroscope from TDK, the GYPRO 4300 features a ±300 degrees per second input measurement range, together with 200Hz bandwidth and one millisecond latency with a closed-loop architecture.

It is the first product in the company’s Tronics GYPRO4000 digital MEMS gyro family which complements the recently announced AXO300 closed loop digital accelerometers range.

It offers precise navigation and positioning, with bias instability of 0.5 degrees per hour as typical value (two degrees per hour maximum) and an ARW (angular random walk) of 0.1 degrees per square hour. The GYPRO4300 is a miniature, digital and low-SWaP (size, weight and power) high performance MEMS gyro, said TDK, for precise positioning, navigation and stabilisation functions in dynamic applications such as railway, land vehicles, VTOL (vertical take off and landing) aircraft and UAV (unmanned aerial vehicles), marine and sub-sea systems, bore hole drilling and surveying instruments.

The closed loop architecture offers a strong vibration rejection of 0.5 degrees per hour per g² under harsh conditions. The GYPRO4300 gyros are housed in a miniature, hermetic, ceramic J-lead package that ensures long operational and storage life and guarantees a high compliance with the stringent thermal cycling requirements of critical applications.

There is also a 24-bit digital serial peripheral interface (SPI) for a swift integration into inertial navigation systems (INS), inertial measurement units (IMUs) as well as attitude and heading reference systems (AHRS). To minimise mechanical cross-coupling in multi-axis applications, the GYPRO4300 is available in three frequency ranges.

Suitable applications for the miniature, low power consumption, the Tronics GYPRO4300 gyro is an cost-effective and low-SWaP alternative to bulky, expensive, and power-consuming solutions like dynamically tuned gyroscopes (DTGs) and fibre optical gyroscopes (FOGs). The solid-state architecture also reduces the number of internal components and system complexity required. As a result, the GYPRO4300 demonstrates a MTBF (mean time between failure) higher than 1,000,000 hours, more than 10 times better than incumbent DTGs and FOGs with similar performances, said TDK. The built-in self-test ensures both an initial verification of the sensor’s integrity and a continuous in-operation functionality test, advised TDK.

Surface-mount RF switch connectors isolate ports to improve data accuracy

Surface-mount RF switch connectors from Linx Technologies provide high isolation between ports for improved data accuracy. They are designed primarily for use in diagnostic measurement between PCB components, the compact, low-profile connectors are available in both SWD and SWF versions.

The RF switch connectors allow customers to conveniently diagnose problems within a transmission line throughout a product’s life cycle, said the company, and provide a quick way to ensure products are functioning as intended.

The RF switch connectors operate in the 0Hz to 6GHz range. They are designed for reflow-solder mounting directly to a PCB for high-volume applications. All Linx connectors meet RoHS lead-free standards and are tested to meet requirements for corrosion resistance, vibration, mechanical and thermal shock.

The SWD and SWF RF switch connectors are available now via Linx Technologies’ distributor and manufacturer representative networks.

Linx Technologies (now part of TE Connectivity) manufactures wireless components including antennas, RF connectors and cables, RF modules, and remote controls.

TE Connectivity offers a broad range of connectivity and sensor solutions, proven in the harshest environments, enable advancements in transportation, industrial applications, medical technology, energy, data communications and the home.
