Data logger makes a splash in harsh transport conditions

A waterproof version of Aspion’s data logger has been added to the family. The G-Log 2 Waterproof is for use in shock and climate monitoring and is designed for harsh transport conditions but also monitors unpackaged goods.

It records shock events traceably on all three axes in milliseconds. It also logs climate data such as temperature and relative humidity. The robust design includes protection class IP 65/67 making it suitable for transporting unpackaged capital goods in harsh working environments, said Aspion. It can also be used to monitor machinery and equipment as well as energy technology.

Data loggers are indispensable in the event of an incident. To claim for damage to high-value goods in transit, load data must be provided in a comprehensible, transparent, and assignable manner to the insuance company. The G-Log 2 Waterproof can reduce costs for damage in transit for industrial companies, said Aspion, and significantly improve process quality checks. The data looger is claimed to be the only one available that offers shock/vibration testing in accordance with transport standard IEC 60721-3-2. For this, the shock sensor compares vibrations and shocks occurring during transport with the selected class and standard. This allows companies to reliably test transport conditions inexpensively and without expert knowledge.

Aspion’s software-based service G-Log Premium expands the scope of performance of the shock data loggers. Recorded data is transferred directly in real time during readout via a secure cloud storage hosted in Germany and made available across locations. All G-Log 2 data loggers can also be optionally commissioned via the app – regardless of location and worldwide. Users simultaneously access high transparency and maximum process reliability, said Aspion. The service extension is particularly suitable for companies with distributed structures, such as multiple sites or globally located business partners.

The G-Log 2 Waterproof is now available from the manufacturer as well as sales partners.

Dual-band GNSS module delivers position accuracy in urban environments

The u-blox NEO-F10N, the company’s latest positioning module, is based on the u-blox F10 platform. Its L1/L5 dual-band technology supports both bands from multiple constellations, including NavIC for metre-level position accuracy in urban areas, said u-blox.

The module’s firmware  is upgradeable and can be configured to support a variety of use cases, including, for example, vehicle aftermarket telematics and micro-mobility markets as well as industrial applications requiring metre-level position accuracy.

According to u-blox, its enhanced resilience against multi-path interference improves position accuracy in urban environments. Leveraging signals from both the L1 and L5 bands, the module achieves significantly better accuracy than using the L1 band alone. While receivers equipped with L1 band support can determine the road a vehicle travels on, those incorporating both L1 and L5 bands can even discern the specific side of the road.

Users currently employing receivers based on modules like the u-blox NEO-M8 and NEO-M9 can seamlessly migrate to the NEO-F10N. The module enhances position accuracy, reduces power consumption, and offers an alternative to customers who do not want to deploy DR (dead reckoning) set-ups.

“With the RF front end offering double SAW filter and low-noise amplifiers (LNA), the u-blox NEO-F10N ensures exceptional immunity to out-of-band RF interference, making it particularly suitable for applications with nearby cellular modems,” said Bernd Heidtmann, u-blox’s product manager, product strategy for standard precision GNSS.

The company has also introduced the ANN-MB5 L1/L5 antenna which offers customers an easy and reliable option for metre-level applications that require multi-band and multi-constellation support, even in challenging environments.

Swiss company, u-blox, specialises in positioning and wireless communication in automotive, industrial, and consumer markets. Its services, and products let people, vehicles, and machines determine their precise position and communicate wirelessly over cellular and short range networks.

The company offers a broad portfolio of chips, modules, and secure data services and connectivity for customers to develop innovative and reliable solutions for the IoT.

Its headquarters are in Thalwil, Switzerland, and the company has offices in Europe, Asia, and the USA.

IoT design kit from Würth Elektronik is Microsoft Azure-certified

The Calypso IoT design kit is an evaluation kit with pre-installed firmware by Würth Elektronik which enables the creation and evaluation of secure end-to-end IoT solutions using Microsoft’s Azure IoT Central.
The design kit is a robust hardware platform for rapid prototyping comprising the Würth Elektronik FeatherWing sensor, its Calypso Wi-Fi FeatherWing, Adafruit’s FeatherWing OLED and Feather M0, which works with the ATSAMD21G18 ARM Cortex M0+ processor, in addition to the pre-installed firmware from Würth Elektronik.
The FeatherWing development board combines sensors, power modules and wireless connectivity in one kit. Hardware and software have been pre-tested and verified for integration into Microsoft’s Azure IoT central.
The Calypso IoT design kit makes it easy to develop the decentralised recording of sensor data, which are processed using the pre-installed UX und API interface Azure IoT Central. The FeatherWing sensor monitors MEMS absolute-pressure, three-axis acceleration, temperature, and relative-humidity sensors, all from Würth Elektronik. The Calypso IoT design kit can be used, for instance, to develop monitoring and control applications for areas such as industrial automation, the healthcare sector, smart home, smart cities, smart grids and smart farming.
“We have joined the Azure Certified Device Program to ensure that customers can swiftly implement IoT solutions using hardware and software tools that have been pre-tested and verified for integration into Azure IoT,” explained Adithya Madanahalli, IoT engineer at Würth Elektronik eiSos in the business unit for Wireless Connectivity & Sensors.
The Calypso IoT design kit is available now and can be combined with other FeatherWings in Würth Elektronik’s and Adafruit’s product portfolios.
Würth Elektronik eiSos Group is a manufacturer of electronic and electromechanical components for the electronics industry. Würth Elektronik eiSos is one of the largest European manufacturers of passive components and is active in 50 countries. Production sites in Europe, Asia and North America supply a growing number of customers worldwide.

Second generation DC/DC converter targets e-mobility

The second generation of 4kW liquid cooled DC/DC converters from Bel Power Solutions, the 700DNG40-24-8, creates DC voltages in hybrid and electric vehicles suitable to power low voltage accessories and replacing a traditional alternator.

The converter is smaller than its predecessor, the 700DNC40-24-8G, and operates at a wider input voltage range from 450 to 900V DC to deliver up to 4000W of output power. The compact design weighs just 4.5kg, making it suitable for confined spaces in a variety of deployments in construction, mining, bus and trucking, along with marine and ground support equipment.

The 700DNG40-24-8 has high efficiency of up to 95 per cent and is reliable with low output voltage noise and excellent dynamic response to load/input changes, said Bel Fuse. The 700DNG40-24-8 converter can be operated in parallel with up to eight units, and includes optional UDS functionality, CAN FD and cybersecurity.

The 700DNG40-24-8 DC/DC converter is available immediately. It will be exhibited at the Battery Show North America in Novi, Michigan (12 to 14 September) on the company’s booth #936.

It is available through distributors, Digikey and Mouser.

Bel designs, manufactures and markets a broad array of products that includes circuit protection, connectors, cable assemblies, discrete components, magnetics and power supplies. The company operates facilities around the world.
