Cypress and Semtech link up to produce two-chip module for smart city applications

Cypress Semiconductor Corp has collaborated with Semtech Corporation on a compact, two-chip LoRaWAN-based module deployed by Onethinx.

The highly integrated Onethinx module suits smart city applications that integrate multiple sensors and are in harsh radio environments. Using Cypress’ PSoC 6 microcontroller’s (MCU) hardware-based secure element functionality and Semtech’s LoRa devices and wireless radio frequency technology (LoRa Technology), the solution enables a multi-layer security architecture that isolates trust anchors for highly protected device-to-cloud connectivity.

In addition, the PSoC 6 MCU’s integrated Bluetooth low energy (BLE) connectivity provides a low-power, out-of-band control channel.

Cypress says the PSoC 6 device is the industry’s lowest power, most flexible Arm Cortex-M dual-core MCU with a power slope down to 22-microA/MHz active power for the Cortex-M4 core. The device is a natural fit with Semtech’s latest LoRa radio chip family, which offers 50 per cent power savings in receive mode and 20 per cent longer range over previous-generation devices.

Security is a primary concern for many smart city applications. The Onethinx module uses the integrated secure element functionality in the PSoC 6 MCU to give each LoRaWAN-based device a secret identity to securely boot, on-board, and deliver data to the cloud application.

Using its mutual authentication capabilities, the PSoC 6 MCU-based, LoRa-equipped device can also receive authenticated over-the-air firmware updates.

Key provisioning and management services are provided by Internet of Things’ security provider and member of the Bosch group, ESCRYPT, for a complete end-to-end, secure LoRaWAN solution.

The module, offered by Cypress partner Onethinx, connects to Bosch Sensortec’s cross domain development kit (XDK) for micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) sensors and to the provisioning system from ESCRYPT to securely connect.

“With its long range and low power capabilities in a compact footprint, Semtech’s LoRa Technology is ideal for vertical applications,” said Vivek Mohan, director of IoT in Semtech’s Wireless and Sensing Products Group. “Combining LoRa Technology with Cypress’ PSoC 6 MCU in a purpose-built IoT module will accelerate the delivery of leading-edge IoT solutions for smarter cities and a smarter planet.”

15W and 20W AC/DC converters target IoT and smart homes

Recom’s latest 15W and 20W AC/DC power supplies are designed for low power Internet of Things (IoT) and household applications.

Based on the footprint of the compact RAC10-K modules, these new modules feature high-efficiency over a wide load range and minimal standby power consumption.

The RAC15-K and RAC20-K series are PCB-mount AC/DC modules with ultra-low energy losses especially in light load conditions. This suits them to for the always-on and standby mode operations needed for IoT and smart home devices. Based on the latest developments of integrated power, a next level of efficiency has been reached allowing 20W of power in a modular 2 in x 1 in case size.

These AC/DC converters have a universal mains input range of 85VAC up to 264VAC for worldwide use and come with international safety certifications for industrial, AV and ITE as well as household standards.

Both the RAC15-K and RAC20-K operate within a temperature range of -40 degrees C to +80 degrees C and offer fully protected 5VDC single outputs.

The complete range of single output (5 to 48VDC), dual output options (12 and 15VDC) and wired versions will be available in autumn 2018.

According to Recom, these devices easily meet EMC class B far below the limits without the need for any external components.

Mouser offers NXP’s i.MX 8M processors for A/V and smart home use

Semiconductor and components distributor, Mouser Electronics, now stocks the i.MX 8M family of applications processors from NXP Semiconductors. The i.MX 8M family is designed to enable embedded designers to meet the new standards of user interface, intelligence and connectivity set by consumer electronic devices. The processors can be used to increase video, graphic, and audio system requirements for smart home and smart IoT applications, such as streaming video devices, streaming audio devices, industrial tablets, medical and fitness, digital signage, and general-purpose human machine interface (HMI) solutions.

The NXP i.MX 8M processors integrate a general-purpose Arm Cortex-M4F core for real-time low-power processing, a GC7000Lite graphics processor, and either two (i.MX 8M Dual processors) or four (i.MX 8M Quad and QuadLite processors) Arm Cortex-A53 cores running at up to 1.5GHz.

The i.MX 8M quad and i.MX 8M dual processors have hardware acceleration for video playback up to 4K and video decoding in h.265, h.264 and VP9. Both processors support 32-bit audio samples with up a sampling rate to 768kHz. The i.MX 8M QuadLite processor allows for video playback with software decoders if needed, for graphics, processing performance, and high-speed interfaces.

 NXP’s i.MX 8M processors are supported by the i.MX 8MQuad evaluation kit, which provides several memory options, a 10/100/1000 Ethernet port, USB 3.0 connectors, and PCIe high-speed interfaces. The board includes connectors for HDMI 2.0, MIPI-DSI for local displays, two MIPI-CSIs for camera input, USB 3.0, Gigabit Ethernet, an audio interface expansion connector, and a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

Power line communication (PLC) modem prepares for smart energy equipment

The PL360B PLC modem supports multiple standard and proprietary protocols used in smart grid infrastructure. According to Microchip, it enables manufacturers to respond to the utility companies’ need to improve the reliability and performance of smart meters and to address multiple markets, end-customer regulations and operational requirements. The single device can be adapted with firmware, reducing development costs and time to market.

The PL360B is designed to support PLC protocols in the frequency band up to 500kHz, such as ITU G.9903 (G3-PLC) and ITU G.9904 (Prime), as well as Cenelec, FCC and ARIB-compliant applications. The PL360B modem is supplied with reference designs for adding a PLC interface to any end-customer application requiring connectivity, including smart meters, lighting, home automation, building automation and remote control.

The PL360B modem offers up to a 25 per cent improvement in power consumption over previous generations, and has a Class D amplification scheme that optimises the modem transmission efficiency further.

The ATPL360 evaluation kit includes two evaluation boards to establish point-to-point communication. The kit includes PC tools designed to evaluate the performance of the PL360B, including a PHY tester for point-to-point test, PLC “sniffer” to capture PLC traffic in a deployed network and a PLC manager to manage the resulting network. G3-PLC and Prime-PLC communications firmware is provided free of charge.

A variety of reference designs is also available for a complete electricity meter with PLC, for a single PLC modem and for a master PLC device in charge of mastering the complete network of PLC nodes. All reference designs come with design files, bill of materials and schematics.
