Six-axis inertial module combine robustness for industrial applications

Adding to STMicroelectronics’ family of low power MEMS sensors for industrial applications, the ISM330DLC six-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) is said to combine high accuracy and robustness with long-term availability assured by ST’s 10-year longevity programme.

The ISM330DLC contains a three-axis accelerometer and a three-axis gyroscope with user-selectable full-scale up to ±16g and ±2000dps respectively. It provides high measurement resolution and energy-saving features for long-lasting battery-powered industrial devices. Target applications include industrial IoT systems, robots, drones, platform stabilisers, and telematics. The wide accelerometer bandwidth up to 3kHz also allows its use in vibration-monitoring and compensation systems.

The ISM330DLC consumes just 0.5mA in normal combination mode and 0.75mA in high-performance mode. A large integrated FIFO that lets the host system retrieve data efficiently, and saves energy with tilt detection, free-fall, wakeup, 6D/4D orientation, click, and double-click features. There is also a sensor-hub feature for collecting data from additional external sensors.

Integrated industrial-grade design features include a dedicated configurable low-latency signal-processing path, low noise, and filtering optimised to ensure closed-loop control stability. The signal path can be independently configured to make gyroscope or accelerometer data available through an auxiliary SPI.

The ISM330DLC also contains a temperature sensor and built-in self-test both for the gyroscope and accelerometer.

The ISM330DLC is in production now, as a 2.5 x 3.0 x 0.83mm plastic land-grid array (LGA) system-in-package.

Insight SiP claims module is first Bluetooth 5.0 long range-compliant option

Believed to be the first fully Bluetooth 5.0 long range-compliant RF module in a miniature SIP package, the ISP1807-LR module was launched by Insight SiP at Electronica 2018.

The module measures only 8.0 x 8.0 x 1.0mm. The Bluetooth low energy module is based on the nRF52840 chip from Nordic Semiconductor and offers a Bluetooth 5 stack including long range, high throughput, advertising extensions and improved co-existence, IPv6 connectivity and Bluetooth Mesh capabilities. These capabilities make the ISP1807-LR module particularly well-equipped to form the hub of IoT solutions, says Insight SiP.

The ISP1807-LR module is suitable for IoT solutions requiring complex applications, fast processing and/or effective power consumption, e.g. advanced wearables, smart home and industrial sensors, advanced remote controls, gaming controllers and beacons.

The Bluetooth low energy part of the ISP1807-LR integrates the nRF52840 chip, with 32MHz / 32kHz crystals, RF antenna and matching circuit and DC/DC converter, for power saving efficiency.

The ISP1807-LR Bluetooth Smart Module use its M4 floating point processor to run fast, advanced calculations and support applications with a memory capacity of 1Mbyte flash and 256kbyte RAM. The embedded Arm Cryptocell-310 on-chip processor provides security and cryptographic functions, saves CPU processing time and reduces energy consumption, adds Insight SiP. A USB interface is also available.

The nRF52840chip’s Bluetooth 5 long range feature is complemented by Insight SIP’s “Antenna in Package” technology, says the company. Bluetooth long range offers up to four times the range of a standard Bluetooth low energy device, for use in a new set of applications, such as smart buildings, lighting, agriculture and infrastructure management.

The ISP1807-LR supports protocols including Bluetooth low energy, Thread, ANT/ANT+ and a range of proprietary 2.4 GHz protocols. A near field communications (NFC) tag is available.

Free qualified Bluetooth low energy stacks for nRF52840 are implemented in the S140 SoftDevices and enable ISP1807-LR to be used in central, peripheral, observer or broadcaster with up to 20 connections. A full set of interfaces is integrated into the device for analogue or digital peripherals including a configurable 46 general purpose I/Os with eight ADC and USB, SPI, I2C and UART buses.

IoT Studio design tool to provide simple solutions

From Digi-Key Electronics comes the DK IoT Studio which is an integrated development environment that aims to provide a simple way for developers and providers to create Internet of Things (IoT) solutions. The DK IoT Studio allows an idea to progress to prototype in minutes without code.

The new tool, developed in partnership with Atmosphere IoT, has an intuitive user interface along with drag-and-drop functionality. Dragging sensors, processors and other library elements and dropping them onto the design panel allows a user to make connections and start collecting data and sending it to a mobile device or the cloud.

The DK IoT Studio also generates the embedded code (firmware) as well as the web and mobile application code.

“We are thrilled with this partnership and what it means for the Digi-Key community,” said Jeff Liebl, CEO of Atmosphere IoT Corp. “Together we are reducing the complexity involved in translating a smart, connected product concept into an actual working system.”

The initial release of the DK IoT Studio will feature Espressif’s ESP32 and NXP’s Rapid IoT Kit, with additional supplier platforms being added quarterly.

The tool also has the ability to create and import/export designs for shareable/customisable projects, uses Amazon Web Services and can integrate data into a third-party application, data warehouse or cloud platform.

“The goal of providing a design tool like the DK IoT Studio is to offer a seamless path from the creation of an IoT solution to field deployment,” said Robbie Paul, strategic programme development director, IoT. “We are ready to help bring your IoT designs to realisation faster and easier than ever before, as the tool is paired with access to Digi-Key’s inventory of the world’s largest selection of electronic components to help you take your designs to the next level.”

MEMS accelerometer can change operating mode on-the-fly

For industrial applications, STMicroelectronics has combined high measurement resolution and low power in the IIS2DLPC3, three-axis MEMS accelerometer for industrial applications.

The accelerometer can change operating mode on-the-fly, from low power to high resolution, enabling high-accuracy measurements within a limited energy budget. The sensor can provide continuous contextual awareness to wake the host system when action is required and take highly accurate measurements before returning to low power operation.

Users can build longer-lasting battery-powered industrial sensor nodes or medical devices, tamper-proof smart meters, and smart power-saving or motion-activated functions. Low power consumption enables smart accessories for industrial machinery or robotics to be created as convenient battery-powered add-on modules that require minimal integration effort, says STMicroelectronics.

There is a choice of four reduced-power modes which lets users optimise power consumption in different application scenarios. Very low noise, down to 90μg/√Hz in high-resolution mode, permits what the company describes as “outstanding measurement accuracy”. Additional features of the IIS2DLPC give users extra control over power consumption, including easy-to-use one-shot data conversion and a 32-level FIFO for storing batched data to reduce CPU intervention. An integrated temperature sensor and built-in self-test capability are also provided.

For industrial applications, the IIS2DLPC is specified over an extended temperature range from -40 to +85 degrees C and covered by ST’s 10-year product-longevity scheme ensuring long-term availability.

The IIS2DLPC is in production now, packaged as a 2.0 x 2.0 x 0.7mm plastic land grid array (LGA) device.
