Analog Devices’ real-time Ethernet multi-protocol switch targets smart factories
Analog Devices (ADI) offers fido5000, a single chip, multi-protocol switch, designed to reduce the size and power of deterministic Ethernet for intelligent factory applications.
Analog Devices introduced the Real-time Ethernet, Multi-protocol (REM) switch chip as part of its new generation of deterministic Ethernet connectivity for connected motion and intelligent factory applications. The fido5000, developed by ADI’s Deterministic Ethernet Technology Group (formally Innovasic), reduces board size and power consumption, while improving Ethernet performance at the node under any network load condition. The fido5000 is suited for synchronised, connected motion applications such as robotics, says ADI. It attaches to ADI’s ADSP-SC58x, ADSP-2158x and ADSP-CM40x motion control processors, to bringing EtherCAT, Profinet IRT, and Powerlink connectivity to the motion and factory settings. Cycle times below 125-micro seconds are easily achievable, says ADI, and the chip is supplied with drivers to simplify integration with any industrial Ethernet protocol stack.
For intelligent factory applications, the fido5000 can be integrated with any processor, any protocol, and any stack making it easy to incorporate a single industrial Ethernet interface that supports multiple protocols in any application, claims ADI. According to ADI, the fido5000 is Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) -ready it future-proofs applications to take into account industrial Ethernet protocols evolving to the upcoming TSN standards.
The fido5000 REM switch is a two-port embedded Ethernet switch that interfaces to any processor, including ARM central processor units (CPUs) and ADI’s ADSP-SC58x, ADSP-2158x and ADSP-CM40x motion control processors. The REM switch supports Profinet RT/IRT, EtherNet/IP with beacon-based DLR, ModbusTCP, EtherCAT, SERCOS, and PowerLink protocols. The fido5000 REM switch comes with a software driver for each protocol that provides an application program interface (API) for integration with any field device or controller stack. The REM software driver has been certified using ADI’s RapID Platform.
The fido5100 is available now, in a 114 BGA (ball grid array) package. The fido5200 EtherCAT-capable REM switch is also available now and also offered in a 114 BGA package.
